Each of the stories in Distractions En Route: A Dancer's Notebook and Other Stories is a finely crafted gem. Poignant and at times very humorous, these vividly realized stories are set across the globe-- from the U.S., to Europe, to an ashram in India. As the title suggests, several stories are about the world of ballet--"satin hooves clattering lightly." Herself a dancer, Rubinstein Alonso, is a keen observer of this world: "We're trained to accept defeat with grace, maintain discipline, no bitching or whining."Other stories focus on the writer's childhood--her family one of the only Jewish families in their neighborhood: "We're one of the odd patches in the social fabric of Oakwood."Many of the stories are about relationships--both those of the writer and others in her milieu. Her wonderful descriptions and totally believable dialogue bring these, often fraught, stories alive.
